Diaper Bag Checklist

No need to overpack that diaper bag! This list tells you all of the basics for a day out with baby.

Packing a Diaper Bag – Newborns and Infants
  • 4 diapers.
    • new babies go through a lot of diaper changes. Pack approximately1 diaper for every hour or two you will be out of the house.
  • Baby Wipes.
  • A small blanket or recieving blanket.
    • the travel cases should carry more than enough wipes for a day out.
  • A clean bottle.
    • if you are bottle feeding or supplementing, a clean bottle is an obvious essential.
    • you will also need formula. You will need either ready-made containers, or pre-measured powder and a separate bottle of water. Pack enough formula to make 4 ounces for every 3 hours you will be out.
  • Nursing pads - If breastfeeding.
  • 1 extra outfit for baby.
    • Choose something easy to change baby into.
  • 1 extra t-shirt for you.
    • it is inevitable that a new baby will spit up and you do not want to be stuck out of the house with a dirty shirt.
  • 2 Burp Cloths
  • A brightly colored infant toy – to keep baby amused
Packing a Diaper Bag – Babies & Toddlers
  • 2 – 3 diapers.
    • Generally you will only change your older baby as-needed, and you may have noticed you use much less diapers a day now. 3 diapers are usually the most you will need for a day out of the house.
  • Baby Wipes
  • An extra outfit for your child.
  • A sweater/sweatshirt.
  • A clean bottle.
    • if your child is still drinking from a bottle.
    • Pack enough formula (ready-made or powder with a separate water bottle) to make 6 ounces for every 4 hours out of the house.
  • A sippy cup full of ice.
    • this way your toddler will have a cold drink all day.
    • extra drinks. Usually you can just purchase drinks for your toddler throughout the day, but you may want to pack a juice box or single serving sized juice in case a store is not nearby. Milk does not travel as easily as juice.
  • Snacks
    • a plastic sandwich bag will hold enough snackfoods for your child. Fill it with a mixture of different snacks that do not require refrigeration. (a box of raisins, some mini rice cakes, a couple cookies or a granola bar, and a single pack of fruit snacks)
  • 1 book for your child with brightly colored pictures.
  • Your child’s favorite small toy.
